An illustration of the tougher UK libel standard is shown by the BBC's decision not to go ahead with a docu-drama that would have included dramatic "reconstructions" (i.e. speculations) of Bush and Blair behind-the-scenes making decisions about Iraq.

The Islamic countries equivalent of the Olympic games (which had been scheduled for March 2010 in Tehran) had to be called off because of disputes between Iran and some Arab nations. The basis of the dispute? Iran prepared a flag to fly mentioning the "Persian Gulf." Other Arab States insist on calling that body of water the "Arabian Gulf." The author of this piece proceeds from that dispute to discuss the difficult various Islamic States have now and have had in the past with getting along with each other.

Cuomo Cannot Stay Away from Governor’s Race for Much Longer - NYTimes.com

I mostly recall Andrew Cuomo (the son of former New York governor Mario Cuoma) for his service in the Clinton administration and his close ties to Al Gore. Until I read this article I knew nothing about his temperament and up until this month I was not focused on his current job as New York attorney general. Rick Lazio is the same GOP stiff who ran against Hillary and lost big the first time Hillary ran for the Senate. I do not see Rick Lazio as being a very tough opponent (assuming it is Lazio) in the general election. Why does Andrew want to be Governor of New York? It is a thankless, rotten job as far as I can tell.

Jed Babbin is no fan of the health care Summit. For example Babbin offers this comparison:

Obama’s performance [at the health care summit] brought to mind one of the opening scenes in the Kevin Costner - Robert DeNiro movie, “The Untouchables.” In it, a store owner argues with one of the Capone gang. “That green beer you’re peddlin’ just ain’t any good,” he says.

“It ain’t supposed to be good. It’s supposed to be bought,” says the mobster.

The only difference between Capone’s beer and Obama’s healthcare plan is that the latter wants to maintain the pretense that it’s good.

Whither Health Care

I read one of those "breaking news" stories on the front page of my local newspaper yesterday and it was all about President Obama's team at the Whitehouse having written their own version of comprehensive health care legislation and presented it to the Democratic leadership in Congress. The news story was severely lacking as to the specifics of this latest health care bill -- other than to assert that it really does exist, has been committed to writing and the President expects to see it passed into law. The article went on to say Democratic Senate leaders are determined to pass health care legislation with a simple majority of 51 votes rather than with 60 votes (requiring only a simple majority is sometimes referred to as the "nuclear option"). I will believe this when it actually happens and not until then.

Dick Cheney versus Joe Biden (and George W. Bush)

After more than a year of ignoring Dick Cheney's pointed criticisms of its handling of the War on Terror the Obama Whitehouse, through the person of Joe Biden, is responding. While there is little Biden has to say on the subject that is new, Biden has given emphasis to two of the better arguments against Cheney; namely, that the Bush Whitehouse abandoned waterboarding and other "enhanced" techniques still favored by Cheney by 2006 and that even Richard Reed the "shoebomber" received prompt Miranda warnings approved by the Bush justice department. In giving Miranda warnings to the Christmas Day bomber the current adminstration is following a policy identical to the policy actually followed when Bush was President. Cheney is not merely urging a continuation of anti-terror policies followed by the Bush Whitehouse, Cheney is seeking the re-adoption of policies rejected by the Bush Whitehouse. To follow Cheney's current position to its immediate and logical conclusion, the Bush administration made America "less safe" from 2006 onward by rejecting tactics favored by Dick Cheney.

3. CNN's Acosta: Tea Partiers are 'Recession-Raging Conservatives'
CNN's Jim Acosta continued his network's bias against tea party protesters on Wednesday's American Morning by depicting them as "recession raging," and questioned one participant over her depiction of President Obama as the personification of death: "Do you think having the President dressed up as the Grim Reaper is a little over-the-top?" Acosta then asked, "You think it's appropriate?" The correspondent's report on Wednesday was the first in a series titled "Welcome to the Tea Party." During his presentation, which first aired 39 minutes into the 7 am hour, Acosta followed his network's model of focusing on the negative depictions of President Obama at tea party gatherings and painting the protests in a negative light. Over 5 months earlier, his colleague Jim Spellman followed the cross-country caravan of the Tea Party Express organization before the massive 9/12 rally in 2009, and zeroed-in on the protesters who labeled the President a Nazi, brought firearms to rallies, or held "outlandish conspiracy theories." He labeled all these "a dark undercurrent." Much more infamously, former CNN correspondent Susan Roesgen took personal offensive at a depiction of the chief executive with a Hitler mustache, while three years earlier, she thought a similar portrayal of President Bush was "comic."

Thoughts from Mister Babbin on Friday's contretemps. "Obama’s bipartisanship scam is akin to the “legitimacy” scam that Kofi Annan ran when he was UN Secretary General. Annan insisted that international action -- especially military action -- couldn’t be legitimate unless the UN blessed it. Under Obama’s formulation, bipartisanship only exists when Republicans debate his ideas using his words and characterizations of the policies he prescribes. It’s Obama’s way of preparing the political battlefield so that only his statist ideas can be debated."

Ego is the Problem: A Buddhist Viewpoint

Here is an excerpt from the book "No Self No Problem" from the Snow Lion publications web site.  I enjoyed this excerpt very much.  I hope you like it too!

Dharma Quote of the Week:

Ego is the problem. Sometimes ego is very spoiled, like a child who is constantly throwing tantrums. Sometimes ego doesn't accept where we are. Sometimes ego doesn't accept who we are. Sometimes ego doesn't accept the way things are without any real complaint. So what do we do? There is nothing that we can do. Sometimes ego doesn't accept the fact that the sky is blue but there is nothing that we can do. You see. Sometimes ego doesn't accept that we are living on a planet that is permeated with natural disasters, earthquakes, floods, and other catastrophes. All we can do is accept that and learn how to surrender to the flow of all events.

When we accept the way things are we are able to love everything and everybody. When we are not able to accept even one thing in this world right now, then how could we ever develop boundless love? Lack of acceptance is conflict. Conflict is pain. It is psychological pain. It is a spiritual illness. As long as our hearts are tormented by that pain, we do not have the strength to give our heart to anything and because of that it is impossible to bring about inner awakening. Enlightenment, you see, is just another name for boundless love.

It is almost impossible to practice loving-kindness towards all living beings without addressing, in a meaningful way, the innumerable problems arising in our own lives. It is a contradiction, you see. It does not work. If our heart is tormented because we are not able to accept things the way they are, then it is impossible to open our heart. It is impossible to let go of all of our defenses and embrace others. Therefore we have to constantly practice and deepen our awareness. We have to remind ourselves to accept things as they are. This is pretty much what the teachings called Mind Training are all about. Mind Training in Buddhism is about carrying those perspectives and even reciting slogans, phrases like "I shall accept the way things are."

That Massachusetts Senate Race: Yes, I Was Wrong

Well folks, I was wrong in predicting a victory in the Senate race for Coakely.  But I am not disheartened because I do not believe all of the media hype about how the loss of one Senate seat will derail health care legislation and other proposed legislation.  I do think it would be just too smarmy if the State of Massachusetts imposed some long delay on certifying the result of the election to keep Brown from being seated for months.  I am not going to badmouth the leaders of Massachusetts, I just hope they don't do that.  It is normal for any (I should say either) party holding the White House and a majority in Congress to lose seats in Congress at the two year mid-term election mark (which will come up in November).  The vote for Brown is, in my view just a reflection of that normal trend.
